One of the peculiar things about this island is number 46. Lastovo island is a part of an archipelago that consists of 46 islets and rocks. The whole archipelago is actually a nature park, and it presents a great challenge to all sailors and travelers who come back to this place year after year, in order to sail around all 46 islands. But besides beeing surrounded by 46 small islands, Lastovo also has 46 churches, 46 hills and 46 valleys planted with olives, fruits and vineyards.
If you are in love with hiking and want to spend some time on the mainland, you will definitely want to explore the diversity of Lastovo island and its nature. The entire island of Lastovo is connected by hiking paths and marked hiking tracks which over 200 km of walking and hiking trails. Best time for hiking is in May, June and September when the days are not too hot and nature is showing itself in all its beauty and when there are no poisonous snakes.
Town of Lastovo is the largest settlement located on the top of the hill with genuine architecture built in stone. It is located on the northern part of the Lastovo island and it is spread over the steep banks of a natural amphitheatre, overlooking a fertile field, facing away from the sea which testifies about its turbulent past. The whole town is a protected cultural monument because of its unique renaissance architecture.
The special characteristic of the town is the diversity of its chimneys. Their unusual cylindrical chimneys that the locals call fumari are picturesque and unusual since they look like miniature minarets. Nobody really knows why the locals started this tradition, but the fact remains that you can hardly find two identical chimneys in Lastovo. This several centuries old custom lasts to this day.
Lastovo is the imperial island where for 9 centuries kings and emperors enjoyed in its wine, olive oil and herbs.
If you enjoy good food than you will set sail for Zaklopatica bay on the north of the island, also known as the bay of good restaurants. We recommend you try traditional specialties made of seafood at restaurants Triton and Augusta Insula such as sardines on skewer, eel stew, grilled moray and in sweets like fritters, sweets made from quince and “skalice”.
Dive into the crystal blue water of Lastovo archipelago and discover the enchanting, rich submarine world and the finest underwater beauty that will create memories for a lifetime. If you want to find a real submarine “heaven” on Lastovo, look for an island group called Lastovnjaci, located on the eastern side.
Diving is allowed only if you are accompanied by a diving guide from an authorized diving centre. On the island authorization have diving centers: “Ancora” in Zaklopatica and “Diving Paradise – Lastovo” in Pasadur.
Some of the special locations for diving are:
– islet Bijelac – underwater passage through the island,
– islet Tajan – underwater cave,
– cape Struga – vast walls of gorgonias reaching even 80 meters of depth.
