Top 8 Tips to Make Sailing With Kids Even More Fun

These (speaking from their experience) are the best ones

1) GET THEM INVOLVED 

THIS is the big one. GET THEM INVOLVED in all aspects from leaving the harbour to anchoring. Give them jobs to do and titles. Titles will make them feel important, and kids respond great to “first mate Kevin you are in charge of reading the compass and map to make sure we are on course” and it will keep them occupied at least for a while.

2) KEEP SAILING SHORT

It’s awesome fun for us grown ups, but kids get bored more quickly. The Croatian coast is great for family sailing since there are more than 1000 islands which offer coves, beaches and coastal towns to explore, and they are all a short sail away from each other.

3) BRING ALONG FRIENDS WITH CHILDREN

The little ones will have someone to hang out with, and when they fall asleep its more fun to share a bottles of wine with friends and enjoy some grownup conversation

4) PACK A POWER BANK

Your phone or tablet doesn’t stand a chance with kids watching their favourite videos on them. Don’t fight it, just accept it (it will give you extended peace and quiet, for a limited time).

5) USE SUNSCREEN

Keep them safe from the sun with sunscreen, long sleeve shirts, sunglasses and hats. Sunburns are not fun for you, and they are even worst for the kiddies.

6) KEEP YOURSELF AND THEM HYDRATED

7) MAKE LEARNING ABOUT SAILING FUN

If on a sailboat be mindful that the “leaning” of the boat while sailing might not be fun for them. Explain the situation to them. What makes the boat lean and why it won’t tip over. Also appoint one of them (the one most afraid) the “lean meter”. That kid will be the one who tells you when to ease up a little and keep the boat at a “safe angle”.

8) POOL TOYS AND SNORKELING GEAR

Bring inflatable and “pool” toys as well as snorkeling gear. Once at anchor and in the water it will keep them occupied for hours.
