Embark on a Gulet Adventure: The Ultimate Sailing Guide

Gulet charter refers to renting a traditional wooden sailing boat, originally built for coastal cruising and now adapted for comfortable charter holidays. These yachts combine classic craftsmanship and authentic maritime character with modern amenities, offering a warm, laid-back onboard experience that blends timeless charm with everyday comfort.

Why Should You Experience a Gulet Sailing Trip?

A gulet sailing trip offers a unique blend of tradition, comfort, and slow-paced adventure. Here are some key benefits:

  • The authentic charm of classic wooden yachts
  • Spacious decks perfect for sunbathing and socializing
  • A peaceful, unhurried pace ideal for relaxation
  • Access to hidden bays and quiet beaches unreachable by larger vessels
  • Personalized service provided by a dedicated onboard crew

What Gulet Types Are Available for Rental?

Gulets come in various sizes and styles:

  • Small Gulets (up to 20 meters)
These gulets are perfect for small groups or couples seeking a more intimate sailing experience. Popular models in this category include Kaira, Ayken Gulet, Remo, and Neptun.
  • Medium Gulets (20 to 30 meters)
The most common size for charters, medium gulets offer a balance of comfort, space, and smooth cruising, often featuring multiple cabins and social areas. Well-known models here are Adriatic Breeze, Sole, and Green Ray.
  • Large Gulets (over 30 meters)
Designed for luxury and longer voyages, large gulets provide extensive deck space and luxurious interiors. Popular models are Oguz Bey, Arabella, and Tajna Mora.
  • Traditional Sailing Gulets
Classic wooden sailing yachts equipped with large sails. These authentic sailing yachts require skilled crew and are less common in the charter market, mostly favored by sailing enthusiasts looking for a genuine wind-powered experience.
  • Motor Gulets
Modern adaptations of traditional wooden gulets that rely primarily on engines for propulsion. Sometimes equipped with sails, these yachts prioritize ease of handling and comfort, making them popular choices for charter guests seeking a relaxed cruising experience. Well-known models here are Queen of Adriatic, Semercioglu, Lotus, and Queen of Datcha.

Must-Visit Locations for a Gulet Sailing Adventure

Gulet charters are available in carefully selected destinations that best suit this style of cruising, offering calm waters, scenic coastlines, and rich maritime heritage. These locations allow gulets to fully showcase their traditional character and relaxed pace of sailing.

  • Croatia – Split and Šibenik are ideal starting points for exploring island-dotted routes, historic coastal towns, and sheltered bays along the Adriatic.
  • Italy – Sicily offers a unique mix of culture, dramatic coastlines, and warm Mediterranean waters, perfect for leisurely gulet cruising.
  • Greece – Athens provides access to nearby islands and classic Aegean routes, combining history with diverse sailing itineraries.
  • Turkey – Bodrum and Fethiye are among the most popular gulet charter bases, known for their calm seas, turquoise bays, and strong gulet tradition.

Best Time for Gulet Charter in the Adriatic & Mediterranean

The best time to enjoy a gulet charter depends on the destination, as calm seas and stable weather are key to relaxed cruising and outdoor living on board.

  • Croatia – The ideal season runs from May to September, with warm temperatures, gentle winds, and long sunny days perfect for slow coastal cruising.
  • Italy – May to October offers pleasant weather and calm seas, allowing for comfortable sailing and plenty of time spent on deck.
  • Greece – The best period is May to September, when weather conditions are stable and the Aegean offers excellent cruising routes close to the mainland.
  • Turkey – April to October is ideal, with warm temperatures, sheltered bays, and consistently calm conditions well suited for gulet cruising.

Crewed Charter: The Best Option for Your Gulet Sailing Holiday

Unlike other types of yacht charters where bareboat options are available, gulet charters are offered only as crewed charters. Due to their size, traditional construction, and specific handling requirements, gulets require a professional crew to ensure safe and smooth navigation. A crewed gulet charter enhances the overall experience by providing expert local knowledge, personalized service, and complete comfort on board — allowing guests to fully relax, enjoy freshly prepared meals, and focus solely on the journey and surroundings without any operational responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licence to charter a gulet?

In practice, no. Gulets are almost always chartered with a captain and crew, so no licence is required - you simply step aboard and relax.

What charter options are available for a gulet?

Gulets are made to be enjoyed with a crew, so they’re usually fully crewed, with a captain and team looking after the sailing and the day-to-day operations.

Which gulets can I choose from?

There are 157 gulets in our fleet - and because each one is a traditionally built, one-of-a-kind boat rather than a standard model, no two are alike. Browse the listings to compare size, crew and price.

Why choose a gulet?

Gulets are built for groups: the biggest in our fleet host up to 46 guests in 2-16 cabins, with the crew usually handling everything on board.

How much does it cost to charter a gulet?

Gulet charters average around 15400 euros per week (roughly 2200 euro per day) – and since the crew is included, that figure covers far more than a bareboat price would.

Do the boats come with a skipper, and is the skipper service included in the rental price?

Gulet boats always come fully crewed and the cost of the crew is included in the price. (exact terms are listed on each gulet’s page ).

What’s included in the price for a gulet?

A gulet charter includes the boat, the crew and its insurance, while fuel, marina fees, drinks, and extras are usually separate. Because packages differ from gulet to gulet, the boat’s page is the place to check what’s covered, and for any additional details the best is to check with our booking agents.

How do payment and the deposit work?

A 50% deposit confirms your booking, with the balance due no later than 30 days before boarding, or the full amount at once if you book within 60 days of departure. On crewed gulets the security deposit is often lower or waived, since the crew handles the boat - the gulet’s page confirms the exact terms. Read more.

How do I check availability and book a gulet?

Check the real-time availability on the gulet's page to find your preferred dates. Click 'Book now' or ‘Send Inquiry’ to open the inquiry form, fill in your details, and click 'Send.' Our team will then verify the availability and contact you with all the details to finalize the reservation and handle the deposit payment steps.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking for a gulet?

All amounts paid for a gulet charter are considered final once booked, including cancellations made 4 or more weeks before departure. Your payment is passed on to the charter company operating the gulet almost as soon as it's received, which means they - not us - decide whether a refund is possible. We will always try to negotiate on your behalf, though we cannot guarantee any money will be returned. Because of this, we recommend taking out cancellation insurance to cover unexpected changes to your plans. Read more.
