Catamaran Charter: Your Complete Guide to Sailing in Style

Catamaran charter allows you to rent a catamaran for a selected period, with the option to sail with or without crew, depending on your experience and preferences. Thanks to their wide layout, spacious decks, and multiple cabins, catamarans offer plenty of room, comfort, and stability.

Sail in Comfort: The Top Benefits of a Catamaran Charter

Renting a catamaran is an excellent option for those looking for a spacious, stable, and comfortable sailing experience as it offers several practical advantages:

  • Significantly more living space compared to single-hull boats, with separate cabins and shared areas
  • High stability on the water, reducing motion and increasing comfort during sailing and anchoring
  • Ideal for families, friends, and larger groups who want to travel together without feeling crowded
  • Shallow draft allows access to bays, lagoons, and anchorages closer to shore
  • Spacious decks and outdoor areas designed for socializing and relaxing
  • Easy onboard movement, making catamarans suitable for all age groups.

What Catamaran Types Are Available for Rent?

Catamarans generally vary in size from 30 to 70 feet, accommodating different group sizes and sailing preferences. They can be divided into three main categories based on propulsion and luxury level:

  • Sailing Catamarans: Wind-powered catamarans that provide a classic sailing experience with spacious decks and efficient handling. Popular models are Leopard 50, Lagoon 43, Nautitech 46 Fly
  • Power Catamarans: Engine-driven catamarans, such as Sunreef 70 Power and Cervetti 44 Power, designed for faster cruising and easier maneuvering, perfect for those who prefer speed and convenience over traditional sailing.
  • Luxury Catamarans: These include premium sailing and power catamarans featuring high-end finishes, expansive living spaces, and bespoke amenities for an exclusive experience. Well-known models here are Sunreef 80 and Lagoon Seventy 7.

Where to Sail: Best Catamaran Destinations in the Adriatic & Mediterranean

Discover key sailing destinations ideal for enjoying space, comfort, and stable cruising conditions:

  • Croatia: Split, Šibenik, and Zadar offer diverse marinas and easy access to numerous islands, perfect for exploring the Adriatic’s stunning coastline.
  • Spain: The Balearic Islands, especially Ibiza and Mallorca, are known for vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and crystal-clear waters ideal for catamaran sailing.
  • Greece: Lefkas and Corfu provide access to the Ionian Sea, while Athens serves as a gateway to the Aegean Sea, offering access to numerous islands and diverse cruising routes.
  • Italy: Salerno, Sardinia, and Sicily offer rich history, delicious cuisine, and varied sailing routes through the Mediterranean’s scenic coastal landscapes.
  • Turkey: Göcek and Fethiye are renowned for sheltered bays, turquoise waters, and convenient sailing distances between anchorages, making them favorites for catamaran charters.
  • British Virgin Islands: Tortola boasts consistent trade winds, pristine beaches, and a well-developed marina infrastructure, perfect for Caribbean catamaran adventures.

When Is the Ideal Season for Catamaran Rental?

Here’s the best time to rent a catamaran in each of the following destinations:

  • Croatia: Late spring to early autumn (May to September) offers warm weather and calm seas, ideal for exploring the Adriatic coast.
  • Spain: Late spring through early autumn (May to October) provides excellent sailing conditions around the Balearic Islands such as Mallorca and Ibiza.
  • Turkey: Spring and autumn (April to June and September to October) are preferred to avoid the intense summer heat while still enjoying pleasant weather.
  • Italy: Late spring to early autumn (May to September) delivers comfortable temperatures for sailing along the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, and Tuscany.
  • Greece: May to October offers warm temperatures and steady winds in regions like Lefkas, Corfu, and Athens.
  • British Virgin Islands: December to April marks the dry season with consistent trade winds, making it the prime time for sailing in the Caribbean.

Should You Choose a Bareboat or Crewed Catamaran?

There are two main types of catamaran charters designed to suit different preferences and experience levels:

  • Bareboat Charter: Ideal for experienced sailors who want full control. No crew onboard - you handle navigation, sailing, and all operations.
  • Crewed Charter: Best for a relaxed, hassle-free experience. Includes a professional crew managing the catamaran. A crewed charter can be a skippered charter (with only a captain onboard) or a fully crewed charter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licence to charter a catamaran?

Only if you take it bareboat and skipper it yourself - then a valid sailing licence is required. If you’d rather leave the helm to someone else, add a skipper to your booking and we’ll pair you with a vetted professional, with no licence needed on your side.

What charter options are available for a catamaran?

There are three ways to sail a catamaran: bareboat, where you’re in command; skippered, where a professional captain joins you; and fully crewed, with a captain and crew for a completely hands-off holiday. Choose whichever matches your experience and the trip you have in mind.

Which catamarans can I choose from?

Choose from 3240 catamarans in our fleet, including popular models such as Lagoon 42, Lagoon 46, Bali Catspace, Lagoon 40, Excess 11, Bali 4.2 from builders like Lagoon, Catana Group, Fountaine Pajot - from agile cruisers to spacious flagships.

Why choose a catamaran?

With room for up to 16 guests across 1-8 cabins, it's the natural choice for families and larger groups who want comfort over outright speed.

How much does it cost to charter a catamaran?

On average, expect around 3848 per week (roughly 550 per day), depending on the season and the model.

Can the vessels be chartered with a skipper, and is the skipper's fee included in the base price?

The skipper fee is extra and not part of the base charter price. Currently, all of our catamarans can be booked with a professional skipper option.

What’s included in the price for a catamaran?

The price covers the catamaran with its standard equipment and safety gear, plus boat and crew insurance. Running costs - fuel, marina fees, tourist tax, final cleaning, and optional extras like a skipper or water toys, are paid separately. You’ll find the full list of additional obligatory and optional costs on each boat’s page. Fuel is paid according to the real consumption, just like rent-a-car - you get the boat with full fuel tanks, and at the end of the charter you go to the gas station and refill the tanks. Port fees are also charged according to the real consumption, wherever you go with the boat and dock for the night, or you might also use a buoy with mooring; you pay separately to that port according to their price list and the size of your boat.

How do payment and the deposit work?

A 50% deposit confirms your booking, with the remaining balance due no later than 30 days before boarding. If you book within 60 days of departure, the full amount is paid at once. A refundable security deposit is taken at check-in and returned if the catamaran is brought back undamaged; the amount depends on the boat. Read more.

How do I check availability and book a catamaran?

Check the live availability calendar on the catamaran’s page to find your preferred dates. Click 'Book now' or ‘Send Inquiry’ to open the inquiry form, enter your details, and hit 'Send.' Our team will promptly verify the vessel's status and contact you to finalize the reservation and secure your booking with the required deposit.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking for a catamaran?

Once you've booked a catamaran with us, your payment becomes partly non-refundable - this applies even if you cancel four weeks or more before your charter starts. The exact cancellation policy for that particular boat is provided to the client along with the contract before the first payment. In general, no refund is allowed if the cancellation occurs less than 60 days before the charter. The reason is simple: your funds are transferred almost immediately to the charter company that owns and operates the catamaran, so it's ultimately their call whether any money can be returned, and, in general, only a part of it can be returned if a new client is found for the same charter period. We always raise the request on your behalf, but we can't promise an outcome. To avoid financial risk, we recommend arranging travel cancellation insurance before your trip. Read more.
