Umag

This town on the northwestern coast of Istria is the central resort town of this part of Croatian Istria. The old town core lies on a peninsula. The main economic activities are wine-growing, fishing and tourism. The Umag Riviera with hotels, outbuildings, apartments, bungalows and campsites extends from Savudrija to Dajla. Umag has retained the appearance of a medieval Mediterranean town with beautiful squares and meandering, narrow streets. Part of the town wall with towers from the 15th century has also been preserved. The development of tourism began at the turn of the 20th century. Today, Umag offers a number of accommodation possibilities and sports and recreational facilities. When entering the waters of the Croatian Istria from the northern or northwestern side, Umag is the first proper port with a customs house and a permanent border crossing. Entering the bay is complicated by three shoals at the entrance. Yachts can moor in the port on the western side of the pier, where the water is 3 m deep. There is a good anchorage in the middle of the port when the bora blows, but it has to be abandoned when the jugo or southwesterly winds begins to blow. The Kacisce Cove south of Umag is a small and shallow bay with a harbor for a few boats with a small drought. There is a launch ramp. The bay is exposed to southerly and southwesterly winds.
